This blog was for my 2009 trip, to see my upcoming trip in August 2011 visit:

I arrived late at night to the Newark Airport. I got a free shuttle from the airport to the Howard Johnson’s hotel that I pre-booked.
Not a great room, but it was cheap!
I heard that there was a restaurant attached to this Howard Johnson hotel.
I had hoped that it was an actual “Howard Johnson’s Restaurant” (remember those?), but apparently they don’t exisit anymore. ![]()
It was some really generic unbranded hotel restaurant, they should have called it “Sysco food outlet”; so I gave the restaurant a pass.
Bedroom picture…

Here’s what I look like after 24 hours of travelling.

More shots of the bathroom (I was bored).

I ordered a pizza, but SOMEONE ate it all! Who could have done such a thing!?

Newark, New Jersey, the Garden State. What a lovely morning!

Newark Airport breakfast.

That’s all I have for now, thanks for reading!
Although the flight back to the states was easier on me than the flight to Bangkok for some reason, the food on the way back was MUCH worse!
While I like the slightly bigger seats on EVA Air, the terrible food they serve, and the horrible airport I have to fly through (Taipei Airport) make it extremely unlikely that I will fly them ever again.
In 2011, I’ll probably fly JAL. Last time I flew JAL, the food was excellent; and I know the airport in Tokyo is a smoker’s paradise!
At any rate, on to the pictures.
First up, some inedible food from Bangkok to Taipei. I think it’s chicken.

Here’s a picture of the Boeing 777 that I took from Taipei to Newark.

The only other interesting shot in this crappy airport was of an asian squat toilet!

This next shot was taken in Bangkok airport.
Instead of going after the people selling counterfeit goods, they give this weak warning!

More crappy airline food.
I think this was supposed to be beef!

I think this next meal was supposed to be “Chicken and Noodles”. It made the beef dish look good.

This time the plane did not stop in Anchorage! It flew directly to Newark, which means I’ll be 24 hours without a cigarette by the time I get to Newark and go through immigration/customs/etc.
Here it is the first cigarette in Newark! It was GOOD!

Suvarnabhumi is the name of the airport in Bangkok. Don’t ask me to pronounce it!
I’ve never been to this airport before. It was still under construction during my previous visit.
Here are some shots:
First up, a huge billboard as I approach the airport. This would have made more sense for traffic LEAVING the airport…

Wall of glass outside the airport.

Something odd about this departure board…

Here’s a closer look. This looks familiar!

Last chance for a foot massage, why not, I still had Thai Baht to burn.

Some Buddhist monks in the airport. Most monks have orange robes, I’m not sure why these had maroon robes.

Some nice etched glass doors to the airport.

Nice shot of the inside of the airport.

A cardboard EVA stewardess FLIGHT ATTENDANT shows the way for me!

Thai pagoda in the middle of the airport.

It’s a very nice airport!
Last batch of miscellaneous pictures of Thailand.
My bed at the Nana Hotel in Bangkok

The Bangkok Skytrain.

Tallest building in Bangkok, the Baiyoke Tower II

Apparently Thai’s think that bowling is hip!
(Ad for bowling alley in Siam Paragon, Bangkok)

I’ve heard once you go black, you never go back!
Maybe that’s what this poster is about.
or maybe it’s just for coffee!

This next photo is from the elevator in my hotel.
The English just doesn’t sound right…

Check it out! Cheap hats! 50 baht is about $1.50!
(Photo taken at the Jatujak weekend market in Bangkok)

Evil pig statue outside a restaurant in MBK center.

Random bowl of pretty flowers… weekend market.

Another shot of me getting fitted for my suit. I’ll post pictures of me in the suit when it arrives.

Hey! I know this guy!
(Taken in Siam Paragon in Bangkok)

What post of mine would be complete without a shot of western food?
Ham and cheese sandwich at Hanrahan’s Irish Pub in Bangkok!

Here’s a small video I took of the Jatujak weekend market my last Saturday in Bangkok
Well, I have just arrived in Taipei, waiting for the flight to Newark. I didn’t think I would hate an airport worse than the airport in Seoul, South Korea. But this airport has now taken the lead in world’s most worthless airports.
As like Seoul, there is NO PLACE to buy simple things like bottled water, english newspapers, etc. Instead there are 1000 little “boutique” duty free stores selling Coach bags and Channel No5, etc. In the transit area, there are piles of soda vending machines, but no place to change money!
Also the only restaurants I have managed to find are a couple of bizzare Chinese food cafe’s. Yea, great INTERNATIONAL airport they have here.
There is also no smoking allowed ANYWHERE in the transit area! …. and I can’t leave! It’s like I’m a prisoner here.
I hate this place, and I have another hour to wait!
Well, this will likely be my last post in Thailand unless I get lucky at the Bangkok airport with a WiFi connection and have something worth reporting.
As expected, it’s almost midnight, I haven’t even started packing yet. (Not really a problem as I’ve been living out of the suitcase for three weeks anyway.)
I was forced to buy TWO cheap Bangkok suitcases this trip. The original one I brought with me has a broken zipper now due to being roughly molested by either TSA or baggage handlers on the way here. I bought the second one to haul various goods I bought on the trip! (for myself and others)
Here’s a bunch of random pictures I’ll leave you with.
First up is a Thai spirit house. EVERY house/hotel/business in Thailand has one of these attached to the property. Has some sort of significance to give spirits a place to rest other than the main house (something like that anyway). Even the major malls have their own spirt houses, very elaborate ones in fact. Spirit houses are tended to almost every day, new flowers are added, offerings of food are left, inscense is lit, etc. The one below was for a bank branch near my hotel.

Another spirit house, this is an very nice one from MBK center that I mentioned in previous posts.

Here’s a little store in MBK center selling religious stuff.

Nana Entertainment Plaza, neon lights across from my hotel.

Abandoned dog on the side of the road, had to tell from the photo, but the dog is covered in scars, and has a crippled leg. There are LOTS of these stray dogs around, cats too.

This is the tour desk for my hotel.
Photo challenge: Name at least three defunct airlines amongst the placards on the wall!
They seriously need to remodel!

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading!
Well, these are actually two separtate things!
First as promised in a previous article, some better pictures of the fried bugs you can find for sale all over Bangkok.

More deep fried bugs!

Then I went to Pizza Hut!

Here’s the pizza I supposedly ordered….:(
You would think after visiting this country for almost a decade, I would learn not to eat pizzas here. It was terrible of course…

No, it’s not the cullinary equivalent of Disneyland. It’s a supermarket chain in Thailand!

The supermarket is like what you would see anywhere else really. The big draw is the cheap eats lunch counter that sits inside! This lunch counter is legendary in the Bangkok message boards as it is very cheap, has a selection of western food, and is open 24 hours! It was packed Sunday afternoon!

I went with Lucksika again. Here she is as we wait for our meals.

Here’s what she got:

…and as expected, here is what I got!

Here is a cook at Foodland hard at work:

I looked around the super market, and I did pick up one item that I had to get:

Lucksika did not know what blue cheese was. She tried some and thought it was disgusting. After I explained what it was (moldy cheese), she was somewhat mad that I let her eat it!
I had to eat the rest of the wedge later (by myself) in the privacy of my hotel room.
That’s all I have for now! Thanks for reading!
